Miyuki: eating on the other side of the fence!

Treachery, treason, traitor all come to mind when I walk into another sushi restaurant, not my own, in the same town as Imura.

I can hear the gasps! Especially when the other restaurant employees know where I work! What are you doing here? Are the first words out of the employee’s mouth. An awkward moment as I cover up my Imura work shirt hoping no one saw that…I’ll take a large hot sake and keep them coming until the awkwardness goes away please.

All kidding aside, some Imura employees enjoy eating at Miyuki after shift. And the owner of Miyuki likes to visit us at Imura for a drink or three or five and maybe a meal as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love eating at Imura, but sometimes it’s nice to get away from everything. And to be able to eat somewhat anonymously.

The Appetizers

Occasionally, I will start my visit at Miyuki with an oyster shooter! In it: ponzu sauce, sake, momiji, green onion and quail egg. It goes down smoother than tequila!

Then I head to the other appetizers on the menu.

The half shell oysters are fresh and taste great. This oyster dish is all dressed up with ponzu sauce, green onion and momiji. I like mine with a splash of hot sake (I do that on my own when it arrives at my table). And then, down the hatch they go just like goldfish!

Miyuki has a house-made pork gyoza (pot sticker) that is an amazing, out of this world, taste! You can have it steamed or deep fried. I like mine steamed and pan seared.

It’s really hard to go back to frozen, factory-made, gyoza after having fresh, house-made, gyoza here!

Mussel Dynamite! Chopped up mussel goodness with a hint of jalapeno baked in its shell. I’m not sure what else is in it, other than Japanese mayonnaise, but it doesn’t matter to me…it tastes great!

Scallop Dynamite! Same goes for the scallops. Chopped up and mixed with that hint of jalapeno and the Japanese mayonnaise, along with other ingredients, baked in its shell and served hot.

Clam Soup. This is a simple soup of clams, mushrooms, tofu and green onion.  My favorite soup here!

The fish, mainly sashimi style and some nigiri style are just a few of the many highlights at Miyuki. And i threw in a photo of a bento box comprised of teriyaki chicken, salad and a cali roll for good measure. You can’t go wrong with any of it.

You have many choices to choose from and plenty of dishes, without fish or meat, for my vegetarian friends out there.

Miyuki is a small sized restaurant with big flavor! It typically has a wait line to get in during peak hours. So be patient! It’s worth the wait. It’s my “go to” place when I still want to eat Japanese food, but wanting to escape the craziness at Imura when my shift ends.

Miyuki is a traditional style Japanese restaurant that has been in business since 1982.

Miyuki Restaurant is located at 452 East Lake Ave. Watsonville, California. It’s a place worth the visit! Come and check them out for yourself.
